With your guide, stop by stop

Most people arrive in Marrakech with a list: Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Majorelle, the big square. The list is fine. The problem is the order. The monuments sit at opposite ends of the medina, they close at odd times, and the lanes between them were never designed for visitors.

So we walk it roughly the way the city grew. We start under the Koutoubia, where the Almohads raised their great mosque in the twelfth century, and drift south to the palaces and tombs while it is still cool. By late morning we are in the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. The souks come later, when the light falls through the reed roofs in stripes, and we finish at Jemaa el-Fna as the smoke from the grills starts to rise.

Four hours if you are in a hurry. A whole day if you are not.

In short: The Marrakech Medina Guided Tour is a 4–7 hour walking tour of the UNESCO-listed old city of Marrakech, Morocco, led by a licensed guide. It covers the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, the Mellah, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna square. Best season: October to May.

  1. Koutoubia, to start

About 77 metres of Almohad stone, and the model for the Giralda in Seville. Only Muslims can go inside, but the gardens behind it are the best place to get your bearings. At its foot you can still see the outline of the first mosque, pulled down because it did not face Mecca correctly.

  2. The Saadian Tombs

Walled up for centuries and only rediscovered in 1917. The queue is for the Hall of Twelve Columns and it moves faster than it looks. Afterwards, take a minute in the small garden, where the graves of soldiers and servants lie among the orange trees.

  3. Bahia Palace

Begun in the 1860s and greatly enlarged in the 1890s by the grand vizier Ba Ahmed. Come early: by eleven the marble courtyard is full. The painted cedar ceilings are what people forget to photograph, so look up.

  4. The Mellah

The Jewish quarter dates from the sixteenth century. The spice market at its entrance is where local families actually shop, and the Lazama synagogue is still cared for and open to visitors.

  5. Ben Youssef Madrasa

A Quranic school where students lived in tiny rooms around the upper gallery until the 1960s. Stand in one of those rooms, then look down at the courtyard. That contrast is the whole idea of the building.

  6. The souks

We do not do the carpet-shop marathon. We stop at two or three workshops we have known for years, you watch things being made, and nobody minds if you buy nothing. If you want to bargain, we tell you what a fair price looks like before you start.

  7. Jemaa el-Fna

Back to the square at dusk. The orange-juice stalls are numbered, the food stalls take over the middle, and the musicians form circles you can step into. Keep a few coins for anyone you photograph.

Checked in October 2026. Prices and opening hours change, so we confirm them again when you book.

Through the winding lanes of the medina to Bahia Palace with its mosaics and ornate decoration.

The Saadian Tombs and the Jewish quarter (Mellah), whose architecture differs from the rest of the medina; the Ben Youssef madrasa, a former Koranic school in Arab-Andalusian style, and a museum with fine woodwork.

The Koutoubia mosque, then Jemaa el-Fna with its snake charmers, henna artists and water sellers; lunch on a panoramic terrace overlooking the square.

Finish at Majorelle Garden in the new town and the Berber Museum in its blue villa, with traditional Amazigh costumes and jewellery.

Good to know

  • Entrance tickets (Bahia, Saadian Tombs, Ben Youssef, Majorelle, Berber Museum) are usually paid separately; Majorelle often requires booking a time slot online in advance.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and a hat; the medina is hot in summer.
  • If you don't want to shop, tell the guide at the start — 'shopping discounts' usually mean stops at partner shops.
  • Majorelle tickets are sold online only now. Book a day or two ahead, especially at weekends.
  • Wear flat shoes. You share the lanes with scooters, and they do not slow down much.
  • If a stranger tells you the square is closed, or offers to show you “the tanneries”, smile and keep walking.
  • Small notes help. Ten and twenty dirham notes disappear fast.
  • Friday morning is the quietest time in the souks; a lot of shops open late.

Half day or full day?

The half day covers the monuments. The full day adds the souks properly, a long lunch and, if you like, Majorelle in the afternoon.

Is it all right with children?

Yes. Kids usually love the square and the workshops. Bring water and plan a break at a café terrace around midday.
