With your guide, stop by stop
Let us be honest about the driving first. Merzouga is roughly 560 kilometres from Marrakech, and the road climbs over a pass at 2,260 metres before it drops toward the desert. That is why we take three days, not two. The two-day trips you see advertised go to Zagora, which is closer, but the dunes there are small. If you want the big ones, the Erg Chebbi, this is the trip.
The good news is that the drive is half the point. Day one is mountains, Berber villages and the earthen ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. Day two is gorges, palm groves and old kasbahs slowly melting back into the ground. By late afternoon on day two you are on a camel, the light has turned orange, and the dunes are taller than you expected.
Your driver is also your guide. They have done this road hundreds of times, know where the good tagine is, and know which camps look after their guests.
In short: The 3-day Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is a guided road trip of about 560 km each way across Morocco's High Atlas (Tizi n'Tichka pass, 2,260 m), Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades and Todra gorges and the Erg Chebbi dunes, with a sunset camel trek and a night in a desert camp. Best seasons: spring and autumn.
Day 1, the Tizi n'Tichka
The road zigzags up through walnut trees and villages hanging off the slope, all the way to 2,260 metres. We stop at the top for photos and, usually, a mint tea that tastes better than it has any right to.
Day 1, Aït Ben Haddou
A fortified village of rammed earth above the Ounila river, on the UNESCO list since 1987. You may well recognise it from a film or two. Climb to the old granary at the top for the view.
Day 1, on to the Dades
Past Ouarzazate and the palm groves of Skoura, through Kelaat M'Gouna, the town of roses. We sleep in the Dades valley, in a guesthouse looking at the cliffs.
Day 2, the gorges
Morning in the Dades, then the Todra, where the canyon narrows to a few metres between walls around 300 metres high. Walk in for twenty minutes. It gets quieter with every step.
Day 2, Erg Chebbi
We reach Merzouga in the afternoon. The camels wait at the edge of the sand and the ride to camp takes about an hour and a half. Then dinner, drums around the fire, and more stars than you thought there were.
Day 3, sunrise
Someone will knock on your tent before six. Climb the nearest big dune, sit down and wait. Then breakfast, and the long road back.
Day 3, the way home
If there is time, we stop at the Rissani market or listen to Gnawa musicians in Khamlia. Back in Marrakech in the evening: tired, dusty and, usually, rather happy.
Checked in October 2026. Prices and opening hours change, so we confirm them again when you book.

Good to know
- Best season for the desert: October to April. In summer daytime heat often exceeds 40°C; in winter nights at camp can drop close to freezing.
- The Tizi n'Tichka pass (about 2,260 m) can get snow or brief closures in winter; the driver adjusts timings to road conditions.
- Pack a small daypack for the camp night (water, charger, warm layer, toiletries). Large luggage stays in the vehicle or hotel.
- Essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, a scarf/cheche against sand, comfortable shoes and a warm jacket for the evening.
- Mountain roads are winding; bring motion-sickness medication if you need it.
- Carry small dirham notes for tips, purchases and meals that are not included; ATMs are scarce in villages and in the desert.
- Always ask before photographing people, especially women, children and nomad families.
- Day 3 is one of the longest of the trip (about 600 km); 'arrival in the afternoon' realistically means early evening.
- Pack a small bag for the camp night. Your main luggage stays in the car.
- Bring a scarf for sun and sand, or buy a chèche on the way; your guide will show you how to tie it.
- Camps range from simple to very comfortable. If a private bathroom matters to you, say so when you book.
- If winding roads make you queasy, sit in front and take something before the Tichka.
- Summer days in the desert are very hot. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
