With your guide, stop by stop

Essaouira is what a lot of people need after a few days in Marrakech. It is calmer, it is breezy, and it smells of the sea rather than traffic and spices. The town was rebuilt in the 1760s by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, who wanted a port open to European trade and hired a French engineer, Théodore Cornut, to lay it out. That is why the streets are straighter than in most medinas, and why the ramparts look as if they wandered over from Brittany.

The drive takes two and a half to three hours. On the way we stop at a women's cooperative that makes argan oil, the real thing, pressed slowly from kernels the women crack by hand. Then a few hours in town: the sea walls, the fishing port, the old Jewish quarter, the workshops where they carve thuya wood. Lunch is up to you, though we will try hard to talk you into grilled fish at the port.

In short: The Essaouira Day Trip is a 10–11 hour guided excursion from Marrakech to the UNESCO-listed Atlantic port of Essaouira (ancient Mogador), about 190 km away. It includes a women's argan cooperative, the Skala de la Ville ramparts, the fishing port with its blue boats, the medina, the Mellah and the thuya wood workshops.

  1. The argan cooperative

Women crack the nuts between two stones, roast some kernels for cooking oil and press the rest for cosmetics. It is slow work, which is why good argan oil is never cheap. Ask to taste amlou, a spread of argan oil, almonds and honey.

  2. The goats in the trees

Yes, goats really do climb argan trees. The ones posing by the roadside, though, are often placed there for tips. We will stop if you like; we will just tell you what you are paying for.

  3. Skala de la Ville

The sea ramparts, lined with old bronze cannons and battered by the wind. Out to sea are the Mogador islands, where purple dye was produced in Roman times.

  4. The fishing port

The best show in town, especially late morning. Blue boats unloading sardines, sea bream and whatever else the night brought in, gulls everywhere, men mending nets. Climb the Skala du Port bastion for the view back over the town.

  5. The medina and the Mellah

White houses, blue shutters, long arcades. The Mellah was home to one of Morocco's most important Jewish merchant communities, and Bayt Dakira, a small heritage house there, tells that story well.

  6. Thuya and galleries

Thuya is a fragrant wood from the hills behind town, carved into boxes and inlaid furniture. Essaouira also has a lively art scene, with small galleries tucked into the lanes.

  7. The beach

Wide, windy and perfect for a long walk. Swimming is for the brave. Kitesurfers love it.

Good to know

  • Pick-up is usually between 7:00 and 8:00 from your hotel or riad; if you stay deep in the medina, the driver meets you at the nearest car-accessible point.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes; add a warm layer for mountain roads, which are much cooler than Marrakech.
  • Carry small dirham notes for lunch, entrance fees, local guides and tips.
  • Always ask before photographing people.
  • Essaouira is windy and cooler than Marrakech; bring a windproof jacket even in summer.
  • For lunch, the fish grills by the port let you choose your catch and pay by weight — agree the price first.
  • Bring a light jacket. The wind can be strong here even when Marrakech is baking.
  • Late June is the Gnaoua World Music Festival. It is wonderful, but book everything early.
  • Buy argan oil from a cooperative rather than a roadside stall, and read the label.
  • If you can, stay the night. Sunset on the ramparts is lovely and the day-trippers have gone.
