Tangier Guided Tour

Tangier, between two seas. Spain on the horizon, the Atlantic on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. A city of writers, spies and traders, with a Kasbah on the hill and a medina that never fully sleeps.

Tangier has always been a door. Phoenicians, Romans, Portuguese, British and Spanish all held it at some point, and from 1923 to 1956 it was an international zone run by several countries at once. That period brought bankers, smugglers, painters and writers, from Matisse to Paul Bowles, and the city still has a slightly cosmopolitan, slightly mysterious air.

Many visitors arrive by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras, an hour or so across the strait, and have one day. That is enough to understand the place if you use it well. We start high in the Kasbah, work down through the medina to the old squares, then drive out along the coast to Cap Spartel, where the two seas meet, and on to the Caves of Hercules.

If you stay longer, Tangier is also the easiest base for Chefchaouen, Tétouan and Asilah, and the high-speed train puts Rabat and Casablanca within a couple of hours.

The route, stop by stop

  1. The Kasbah

The fortified quarter at the top of the medina, with the old sultan's palace, Dar el-Makhzen, now the Kasbah Museum. From the terrace by Bab el-Bahr you can see across the strait to Spain on a clear day.

  2. The medina and Petit Socco

Down through the steep lanes to the Petit Socco, the small square where the international-zone cafés once buzzed with deals and rumours. It is calmer now, and still a fine place for a coffee.

  3. The American Legation

The first property the United States ever owned abroad, given by the sultan in 1821. Today it is a museum and cultural centre, with a room dedicated to Paul Bowles and a lovely courtyard.

  4. Grand Socco

The big square between the medina and the new town, once the main market, with the Mendoubia gardens and their huge, centuries-old tree nearby.

  5. Cap Spartel

About 14 kilometres west, the northwest tip of Africa. A lighthouse, pine trees, and the line where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. On windy days you can see where the colours of the water change.

  6. Caves of Hercules

A sea cave on the Atlantic coast, partly natural, partly widened by people who quarried millstones here. Its opening onto the ocean is often said to look like a map of Africa. Legend says Hercules rested here after his labours.

Questions about this trip

Can we visit Tangier as a day trip from Spain?

Yes. Fast ferries cross from Tarifa in about an hour. A day is enough for the city and Cap Spartel.

Is Tangier safe?

Yes. It has changed a lot in the last twenty years and is now a clean, busy port city. As anywhere, keep an eye on your bag in crowds.

Where exactly do the two seas meet?

Off Cap Spartel, just west of Tangier. That is the official boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Strait of Gibraltar.
